1) Grading system is CGPA, out of 4, as correctly pointed out by Manav
2) The weightage for GPA for Summers is not THAT much for some time, as Summers would start from Aug. '07 itself, while u guys would be giving ur first exam itself in Sep. last week. By the time the 1st trim. results would be declared, it'd have already been Dec. '07 & approx. half of ur summer placements would be
done. Summers that are held AFTER the results would get declared would get affected by GPA's to a certain extent. But my personal experience says that if u have an impressive work exp. & a personality to carry on with the interview, recruiters would select you.The top-notch companies, esp. financial one's, would take some specialized/technical tests to gauge ur knowledge in this area. Thus, the absence of ur GPA's at that time wouldn't have any effect.
For Final placements, ur CGPA's carry more weightage. Yes ! it DOES give you that initial push. Usually, good companies set down a cut-off (say, they'd consider only guys who have min. CGPA of 3.2). Having said that, there is no dearth of people in our seniors' batch who got good placements despite avg. CGPA's.
3) There could've been many major & minor things that i could've done in my 1st year to improve my scores now [oh yeah ! there is a vast scope of improving upon my scores....nothin' is perfect now, is it ? ;-) ]. But the OVER-RIDING thing that I could've done is BETTER TIME MANAGEMENT & PRIORITIZING. Mind you, these are my OWN views.....my other batch mates may have other views. but then, its this very diversity that makes us unique :-)
