Monthly budget is purely dependent on one's sources & lifestyle.
Lemme warn u guys though that Mumbai is DAMN costly....esp. in the area where we have our college. In general too, Mumbai is costlier than most other cities in India.
On an avg., assuming a decent lifestyle , Rs. 5000 per month, on an avg. should work out for you, if u r at the hostel. This includes food @ the hostel & even outside sometimes, transportation (assuming u don't have a bike....if u have one, the expenses automatically shoot up), ur grocery & misc. expenditures.
If u guys party, drink or smoke or wanna have food outside most of the times or or beleive in purchasing only branded products & shop a lot or have a vehicle then the amount is gonna be almost double that (per month). If u can afford it, then the sky's the limit as far as the monthly expenditure is concerned.

I know several people who've restricted the monthly expenditure to around 4000-4500 per month by leading a 'simple' lifestyle ;) So it ultimately depends on the person and as Deven put it Sky is the limit!
